The structural and magnetic properties of Fe particles grown in a Cu matrix
by annealing a precursor alloy of composition Cu97Fe3 are discussed. Struc
tural characterization suggests that all segregated Fe particles are BCC-ty
pe. However, AC susceptibility and hysteresis loops display short-range ant
iferromagnetic correlations and a spin glass-like behavior. The former is a
nalyzed in terms of the effects occurring at the particle surface, while th
e latter is associated with the Fe spins diluted in the Cu matrix. (C) 1999
