A Cr80Fe20 alloy was elaborated by mechanical alloying, in a planetary mill
, from powder mixture of elemental Fe and Cr. Mossbauer spectrometry was pe
rformed to follow the formation of the alloy which is paramagnetic at 300 K
. The weight of the magnetic contribution due to the uncompletely alloyed a
lpha-Fe, decreases linearly with the milling time. Powder particle microstr
ucture was studied by TEM. The micrometer particles consist of nanocrystall
ine grains of about 5-15 nm. After 12 h of milling, the Cr80Fe20 alloy seem
s to be highly disordered than after 3 h. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science. B.V. A
