A theoretical model describing the surface magnetoelastic properties ('surf
ace magnetostriction') in nanocrystalline materials is proposed. The model
is based on the magnetic dipole-dipole interactions. The nonuniform medium
consisting of perfect spherical crystalline grains in a magnetic environmen
t of two structures (amorphous and crystalline) is considered. The calculat
ions are limited to simple ferromagnets of high symmetry such as body cente
red cubic (BCC) and face centered cubic (FCC) crystals. (C) 1999 Elsevier S
