The magnetic anisotropy of ferrimagnetically coupled Gd/Co and Gd/Cu/Co/Cu
multilayers has been analysed. The samples exhibit a high in-plane magnetic
anisotropy above that value expected from the shape anisotropy. The origin
of this anisotropy is discussed in terms of the creation of magnetic charg
es at the interfaces due to a negative exchange interaction between Co and
Gd. A theoretical model has been developed to describe the perpendicular re
magnetisation process of these samples. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All
