In situ magneto-optical Kerr effect measurements have been performed on a P
t/Co/Au(1 1 1) sandwich to investigate the development of the magnetic anis
otropy (MA) of the Pt/Co interface during the growth of a Pt overlayer. Str
ong peaks of coercive force are observed for Pt(t(Pt))/Co(6 AL)/Au and Au/P
t(t(Pt))/Co(6 AL)/Au structures for t(Pt) around two atomic layers (AL). A
strong peak of interface MA is observed for the same Pt thickness. These ef
fects, together with a peak of Kerr rotation at 632.8 nm wavelength, are at
tributed to changes in the electronic structure at the Pt/Co interface. (C)
