The constructive summing of direct and indirect channels above the absorpti
on threshold of a core level can cause a massive increase in the emission c
ross section, leading to a phenomenon called "resonant photoemission." Usin
g novel magnetic linear dichroism in angular distribution photoelectron spe
ctroscopy experiments and theoretical simulations, we have probed the natur
e of the resonant photoemission process in Gd metal. It now appears that te
mporal matching as well as energy matching is a requirement for true resona
nt photoemission. (C) 1999 American Vacuum Society. [S0734-2101(99)10004-6]
