Carbon-carbon composites (CCC) are a unique class of high performance mater
ials. Since their inception, about 1960, over 100 different types of CCCs h
ave been created with properties previously not available. Novel materials
were designed, fabricated, tested, upgraded, and used in selected prototype
applications. Componentry benefits were demonstrated and later the materia
ls were used in operational systems. This review focuses on the applied use
s of CCC materials in the fields of friction, aerospace, propulsion, power
generation, thermal management, industry, and medicine.
