The effect of NO on the activity of a Cu/V/K/Cl catalyst in the combustion
of soot generated in the flame of a gas oil burner has been investigated. T
emperature programmed oxidation (TPO) of soot-catalyst mixtures in the abse
nce and in the presence of NO in the reactant gas was performed with a flow
microreactor. The effect of NO was also investigated by TPO of soot collec
ted on a ceramic filter supporting the Cu/V/K/Cl catalyst. In all cases the
presence of NO resulted in increasing the rate of carbon combustion, mainl
y due to carbon oxidation by NO2 formed by NO oxidation on the same catalys
t. Therefore, the Cu/V/K/Cl catalyst is capable of activating in the same r
ange of temperatures the oxidation of both soot and NO. (C) 1999 Elsevier S
