the leaching behaviour of ZrF4-FeF3-FbF(2) based floride glass in static de
ionized water was investigated at 18 degrees C and 60 degrees C. The corros
ion process was monitored by solution analysis of individual elements leach
ed into solution versus time. The leach rate observed for this glass was hi
gher than that of most other fluoride glasses. The corrosion process follow
ed a nearly time(1/2) dependence, implying a diffusion rate controlled proce
ss. Zr exhibited the highest normalized leach rate at 18 degrees C, while a
t 60 degrees C the Fe leach rate was greatest. The IR spectra indicated the
formation of a hydrated leach layer on the glass surface. The phase separa
ted structure of this glass is believed to influence the corrosion mechanis
ms.
