A wide variety of amplitude- or phase-modulated pulses, which are designed
for selective excitation, inversion or refocusing, are severely perturbed b
y radiation damping effects in the presence of a large macroscopic magnetis
ation. A general method is presented to compensate for radiation damping du
ring the application of selective rf pulses. This method, which has general
applicability for any amplitude- or frequency-modulated rf pulse, is demon
strated experimentally for inversion pulses. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V.
