Development of computer technologies and growing knowledge of computer tech
niques with students graduating from secondary schools lead to a necessity
of continuous computer-oriented subjects, to co-operation between individua
l departments of universities and to seeking links with foreign universitie
s having a similar orientation. The central point of the paper is a descrip
tion of the knowledge of computer techniques with students entering the Ins
titute of Chemical Technology in Prague and a survey of computer-oriented s
ubjects offered. A further part of the contribution is a short study concer
ning orientation and development of the course Computing methods as well as
the description of equipment necessary for ensuring pedagogical and resear
ch activities based on the use of computers and computer networks.
