The failure mechanism of laminates with internally-dropped plies has been s
tudied by means of moire interferometry. An enlarged model for a dropped pl
y region gives the mechanical behavior within the region in detail. The str
ain distributions around the region, especially for three corners, are meas
ured and the stress components that cause delamination are discussed. Failu
re tests show three basic failure modes for different interply strengths un
der tension and compression loading. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rig
