Abstract
The yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae is the first fungus for which the struct ure of the cell wall is known at the molecular level. It is a dynamic and h ighly regulated structure. This is vividly illustrated when the cell wall i s damaged and a salvage pathway becomes active, resulting in compensatory c hanges in the wall.
