T. Zimmermann et al., Fertility after discontinuation of the dienogest-containing oral contraceptive Valette((R)). First data of an ongoing study, DRUGS TODAY, 35, 1999, pp. 89-95
The fertility after discontinuation of the new, 21-day combined oral contra
ceptive Valette(R) containing 30 mu g ethinylestradiol and 2 mg dienogest w
as evaluated in a prospective 1-year (13-cycle), open-label, ongoing multic
enter surveillance study. Up until the data lock point, a total of 348 wome
n were enrolled, of whom 249 had already finished the observational period
and 99 were still under observation. Out of these 249 women, 66 (26%) dropp
ed out for several reasons and 183 (74%) completed the study regularly; of
these 183 women, 173 became pregnant and 10 did not. About 60% of all the w
omen were pregnant within three cycles, and 95% within 1 year after stoppin
g Valette(R). The rates of conception as well as the time between discontin
uation and conception practically did not differ in short-term (<1 year) an
d long-term (greater than or equal to 1 year) users. Thus, fertility after
stopping Valette(R) returned rapidly in the vast majority of women, irrespe
ctive of whether this pill was used for short or longer periods of time. (C
