Optical microscope observations and linear birefringence measurements were
performed to obtain more information on the phase transitions and phases pr
operties of the N(CH3)(4)FeCl4 single crystal. At least four phase transiti
ons of first order were detected (at 385 K, 303 K, 294 K and 265 K on cooli
ng), some of them of very low kinetics and large thermal hysteresis. The ph
ase above 386 K was found as an isotropic one.
