Abstract
Short range meson-exchange mechanisms such as rho --> omega pi(0) cont ribute significantly to the amplitude for pp --> pp pi(0) near thresho ld in addition to pion rescattering. The uncertainty of the latter con tribution, which depends on poorly determined parameters, is estimated . Allowing for this uncertainty and taking the short range meson excha nge contributions into account makes it possible to reproduce the meas ured cross section.
