Abstract
Dominik Wodarz and colleagues describe a mathematical model for the in vivo dynamics of human T-cell leukaemia virus type 1 (HTLV-1) infection and the virus-specific cytotoxic T lymphocyte response. They show that a high rate of viral replication is consistent with the relative sequence invariance o f HTLV-1 and might be necessary to maintain a persistent infection.
