Abstract
The temperature dependence of the translational and reorientational couplin g parameter "R" of liquid crystals, 4-cyano-4'-penthylbiphenyl (5CB) and p- methoxybenzylidene-n-butylaniline (MBBA) in the isotropic phase was obtaine d as a function of the concentration of diluent carbon tetrachloride from t he polarized and depolarized Rayleigh light scattering spectra. A differenc e in temperature dependence of R for MBBA-CCl4 and 5CB-CCl4 mixtures near t he isotropic-nematic phase transition point was observed. The coupling para meter R at temperatures hi,oh above the transition point decreased rapidly with the concentration of diluent.
