K. Endo et al., Metal particulate (MP)/metal evaporation (ME) double-layered media for high-density recording, JPN J A P 2, 38(4A), 1999, pp. L374-L376
We have fabricated a double-layered tape composed of a metal thin film unde
rlayer and a metal particulate (MP) upper layer. Two kinds of metal thin fi
lms-Cu nonmagnetic and Co magnetic-were deposited under the MP layer by met
al evaporation (ME). We found that the magnetic underlayer affected the mag
netic recording properties of the tape in high-density recording. Co magnet
ic underlayer tape output was significantly enhanced compared to Cu nonmagn
etic underlayer tape output, especially at shorter recording wavelengths. I
t is possible to enhance output by introducing another high-density recordi
ng layer under thr main magnetic layer. We consider that the internal magne
tization of the magnetic underlayer assists the upper layer recording under
this condition, providing a new way to improve the recording density of MP
media.
