Adsorption of Triton-100 from aqueous solutions on polyethylene (PE) w
as studied using a piezoelectric microweighing method. This method was
developed using a quartz microbalance and is based on the dependence
of the vibration frequency of the quartz resonator (microbalance trans
ducer) on the amount of the substance deposited on its surface. PE fil
m was deposited on a resonator from an organic solvent. The advancing
contact angles THETA(a) of water drops on the modified PE surface were
measured on the same specimens. A comparison of GAMMA(c) and THETA(a)
(C) isotherms showed that adsorbate was distributed nonuniformly over
the PE surface; i.e., the adsorbed layer has an ''island'' structure.
