This paper examines the information needs of visitors to the Science Museum
in London, it is based on a case study at the Museum, but draws conclusion
s: which can be more generally applied to museums, galleries, stately homes
and similar attractions. It defines the types of information which various
classes of visitors require, the data resources which are necessary to pro
vide this information, and the technical systems necessary to deliver the i
nformation. Several surveys of visitor information requirements are reviewe
d and are drawn together to develop an overall requirement for visitor info
rmation and requirements for remote access to information, A logical struct
ure and technical plan are developed and there is an in-depth cost-benefit
analysis.
