Recently, the SOP (super olefin polymer) was developed by the establis
hment of a new polymer morphology model for the PP/elastomer blend pol
ymers, called ''elastomer matrix morphology''. Here the difference of
toughening mechanism between SOP and EMT (elastomer modified thermopla
stics) was studied by single extension measurements, three point bendi
ng of U-notched bar measurements, and transmission electron microscope
(TEM) observation. The high toughness revealed by SOP is attributed t
o improved strength of the fibrils of the craze. The stable plastic de
formation due to the some shear yielding bands is effective for the im
provement of toughness in PP/elastomer blend polymers.
