For the purpose of exploring the structural relations of organometallic com
pounds to their organic components, a series of linear polycyclic aromatic
hydrocarbons (PAHs) benzo[a]phenanthrene (L-1), dibenz[a,h]anthracene (L-2)
, benz[a]anthracene (L-3), and naphtho[2,3- a]pyrene (L-4), have been studi
ed towards complexation with silver(I) ion. The crystal structures of [Ag-3
(L-1)(ClO4)(3)(H2O)(2)] 1, [Ag-2(L-2)(ClO4)(2)] 2, [Ag-2(L-3)(ClO4)(2)(H2O)
] 3, and [Ag-2(L-4)(CF3SO3)(2)] 4 have been determined by single-crystal X-
ray diffraction. Although each of these complexes exhibits distinct co-ordi
nation behavior and different frameworks, all of them retain or partially k
eep the herringbone-packing pattern of their metal-free aromatic ligands in
the crystalline state, and display similar two-dimensional multilayer arch
itectures on a given plane. The fundamentals of the synthesis, possible for
mation mechanism of these polymeric networks and some properties are discus
sed.
