We have studied the electronic structure of ion-beam-mixed and are-melted C
o-Pt alloys by using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and X-ray absorption
near-edge spectroscopy. The decrease of the white line area in the Pt L-3 a
bsorption-edges was attributed to an increase in the number of d(5/2) elect
rons at the Pt sites upon alloying with Co. The Co K near-edge region indic
ated that the Co 4p charges transferred away from the Co sites. It was foun
d that upon alloying there was an increase in the number of d(5/2) electron
s at the Pt sites and a decrease in the number of p electrons at the Co sit
es. The observed valence band changes were also explained in terms of charg
e redistribution.
