Dy3+-doped stabilized-GeGaS sulfide glasses are synthesized and characteriz
ed. When antimony is added to GeGaS, the glass shows very weak crystallizat
ion upon heating as compared to standard compositions. Because of the low p
honon energy inherent in sulfide glasses, the 1.3 mu m emission of Dy3+ ion
s can be observed. This transition is characterized in terms of emission cr
oss-section and quantum efficiency. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All righ
