It is found that differential absorption spectra of Co2+:ZnGa2O4 crystals e
xhibit the stimulated emission T-4(1b) - (4)A(2) band at 670 nm and excited
-state absorption (ESA) bands in the region between 360 and 580 nm. The ESA
bands in the 540-570-nm region and at 480 nm are assigned to transitions f
rom the E-2((2)G) state. The absence of the strong ESA in the luminescence
band and large cross section for stimulated emission (sigma(SE) congruent t
o 4 x 10(-19) cm(2)) suggests the possibility of lasing of tetracoordinated
Co2+ ions in Co: ZnGa2O4 crystals in the visible region.
