Abstract
The management of a baby born with a major disability presents one of the m ost significant ethical problems faced at the end of the second millenium. These problems concern the individual baby and its family, but society as a whole is and must be involved in their resolution. This article explores t hese issues as they impact on the contemporary surgeon confronted with chan ging medical, technical, and ethical considerations.
