Significant advances have been made in the areas of mathematical model
ling of surface irrigation processes; nevertheless, their impact on sy
stem design and management remains minimal. The main reasons for this
are complexity, cost, and the level-of-expertise requirement of the ex
isting models. Empirical functions of the type presented in a companio
n paper can help overcome these problems. This paper describes the use
of those functions in the conventional design and management of furro
w irrigation systems.
