A study was carried out, with use of the Cambridge Structural Database, to
examine the role of CH/pi interaction in the conformation of organic compou
nds. A number of short intramolecular CH/pi distances have been disclosed i
n the crystal structure of these compounds. The structure was inspected to
know whether the crystal conformation is a consequence of the so-called pac
king forces, or the CH/pi interaction plays a role. The result has demonstr
ated that the CH/pi interaction plays an appreciable role in controlling th
e conformation of organic compounds. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rig
