G. Derrien et al., Pentabarium tetraantimonide, beta-Ba5Sb4: a more symmetrical arrangement for the Ba5Sb4 compound, ACT CRYST C, 55, 1999, pp. 1044-1046
Ba5Sb4 crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Cmca and is isostructur
al with Eu5As4 reported in the Ccmb alternate setting. beta-Ba5Sb4 is a new
arrangement which is more symmetrical than alpha-Ba5Sb4 [Brechtel, Cordier
& Schafer (1981). Z. Naturforsch. Teil B, 36, 1341-1342; Pnma, isostructur
al with Sm5Ge4]. The structure contains two anionic moieties, i.e. Sb-4(2-)
dumbbells [Sb-Sb 2.886 (3) Angstrom] and Sb3-. The Sb1 atom (Sb3-) lies in
side a monocapped distorted trigonal prism (6 x Ba1 and 1 x Ba2). The Sb2 a
tom, which forms the Sb-2(4-) dumbbell, sits inside a tricapped trigonal pr
ism (6 x Bal, 2 x Ba2 and 1 x Sb2).
