Direct peritectic grow-th (DPG) is a novel process in which textured YBCO t
hick films are deposited directly onto an unoriented silver alloy. No buffe
r layer is employed between the YBCO superconducting film and the silver al
loy substrate. The textured YBCO grains have been obtained through peritect
ic solidification over a Hide range of temperature and time. No observable
reaction of the substrate was found with the YBCO melt at the maximum proce
ssing temperatures near the peritectic point (from 950 degrees C to 1030 de
grees C). The transport J(c) has reached a respectable value of 8x10(4) A/c
m(2) at 77 K and in zero magnetic field. In this paper, we show that the DP
G method is capable of producing highly textured YBCO thick films, which ar
e scalable to long lengths with low cost.
