Abstract
Short rolled multifilamentary BSCCO-2223 oxide-powder-in-tube (OPIT) wire h as reached a core critical current density J(c) over 73,000 A/cm(2) (77 K, self-field, 1 mu V/cm) in multiple samples, with engineering (full-cross-se ction) current density J(e) of 22,800 A/cm(2) (77 K, self-field, 1 mu V/cm) . Regular production wires several hundred meters long show average enginee ring current density over 10,000 A/cm(2) (77 K, self-field, 1 mu V/cm), a b enchmark for commercial electric power applications such as cables and moto rs. Cost studies indicate that cost-performance below $10/kA-m is attainabl e for full-scale production levels. Next-generation YBCO-123 coated gy offe rs further potential cost-production levels. Next-generation YBCO-123 coate d conductor technology offers further potential cost- performance improveme nts.
