Activated carbons were prepared from Uruguayan eucalyptus sawdust a waste f
rom forestry and wood industry by using CO2 and steam gasification. The pre
sent situation of activated carbon market in Uruguay is analysed, in terms
of quantities, prizes and the origin of the commercial carbons. For the car
bons prepared, the evolution of yield with time, and BET areas, bulk densit
y and porous evolution with increasing burnoff are compared Conditions for
the preparation of an activated carbon with adequate characteristics for co
mmercial applications are given.
