A heterobimetallic strategy (magnesiation followed by lithiation) enables t
he crystallization of the first alkali or alkaline earth metal derivative o
f a diazasulfate. An Li4O4 ladder is the central feature of the centrosymme
tric dimer {Li4Mg[O2S((NBu)-Bu-t)(2)](3). 4THF}(2), which incorporates a 36
atom Li6Mg2S6O10N12 cluster, in which six [O2S((NBU)-B-t)(2)](2)- dianions
are coordinated to the Li+ and Mg2+ cations via O,N-chelation.
