This paper presents the alternating method to study the stress distribution
s of the multiple circular holes with the rhombic pattern in the infinite d
omain. For the purposes of the efficiency and simplicity, one must use an a
nalytical solution for a single circular hole in an infinite domain, subjec
ted to the arbitrary traction on the circle boundary. Then, the analytical
solution correlates with a successive iterative superposition process capab
le of satisfying the prescribed boundary conditions in the plane problems w
ith the multiple holes. Comparisons between the solutions of the present pr
ocedure and the conventional boundary element technique demonstrate the acc
uracy and the advantages. Effects of the number of holes and the spaces on
the stress concentration factors also are evaluated in detail herein. (C) 1
