The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of response effort, no
velty of stimulus arrangement, and choice on selecting behavior of an indiv
idual with profound mental retardation in a vocational setting. Data showed
that: (a) novelty of stimulus array, not response effort, affected selecti
ng behavior, and (b) choice affects behavior only to the extent that prefer
red outcomes are attained. Results are discussed in relation to matching th
eory.
