Plasma beta-endorphin levels were studied in the coronary sinus of 8 patien
ts undergoing percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA). All th
e patients had ECG ischemic signs and pain during the inflation of the ball
oon. No significant changes in plasma beta-endorphin levels were observed d
uring PTCA-induced ischemia.
Baseline coronary sinus plasma beta-endorphin levels were found to be eleva
ted when compared with peripheral ones which would suggest an accumulation
of beta-endorphin in the ischemic heart.
