A new small/wide-angle neutron diffractometer (SWAN) was installed at a spa
llation pulsed-neutron source at KEK (KENS). SWAN utilizes incident neutron
s having a wide wavelength band from a solid methane moderator at 26 K, and
was designed to cover a wide momentum-transfer (Q) range of 0.005 less tha
n or equal to Q less than or equal to 12 Angstrom(-1) with high intensity.
It has been confirmed that the available Q range of SWAN is 0.008 Q less th
an or equal to 2 Angstrom(-1), up to now. An additional refinement of the i
nstrument and installation of detectors should lead to a realization of the
designed e-range. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
