Zn1-xBexSe alloys have recently been grown for applications to ZnSe-based b
lue laser diodes. We have used Raman scattering to investigate the phonon m
odes of this new alloy system for 0 less than or equal to x less than or eq
ual to 0.13. This alloy shows a two-mode behavior. The Raman data have been
analyzed by using a modified random-element-isodisplacement model, and sev
eral characteristic phonon frequencies have been determined for the first t
ime. The local mode frequency of Be in ZnSe is 447 cm(-1), and that of Zn i
n BeSe is 210 cm(-1). The LO phonon frequency of BeSe has an upper bound of
about 510 cm(-1).
