Abstract
Maritime training, research, and education have played a decisive role in s haping the modern maritime culture in the UK. The development pattern is di scussed followed by an evaluation of the nature of the 'knowledge industry' as it currently exists with reference to learning, courses, teaching, rese arch, institutions, and the advent of information technology.
