Abstract
Charge-ordered manganites of composition Pr1-x(Ca1-ySry),MnO3 exhibit persi stent photo-conductivity when illuminated by X-rays. We review transport an d X-ray diffraction data as functions of X-ray exposure, magnetic field, an d temperature which shed light on the origin of this unusual behavior. The experimental evidence suggests that the mechanism primarily involves a ferr omagnetic polarization of local spins by hot electrons generated by the X-r ays. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science S.A.
