Abstract
In extracting and accelerating a particular ionic beam from a molecula r specimen, the major difficulties faced are the reduced beam intensit y and poor quality of the delivered beam. One can explain such effects on the basis of Coulamb explosion of the molecule during stripping. I n this paper we present our study with MgO molecular specks in extract ing Mg beam. A combination of foil and gas stripper at the terminal is used and an optimum combination of gas stripper pressure and accelera tor parameters are reported for the selected case. As this technique c an be applied to any kind of molecular beam and needs no additional se tup from what is already present inside the accelerator, ii can substa ntially expand the range and quality of delivered beams with existing tandem accelerators.
