I. Foster et C. Kesselman, GLOBUS - A METACOMPUTING INFRASTRUCTURE TOOLKIT, The international journal of supercomputer applications and high performance computing, 11(2), 1997, pp. 115-128
The Globus system is intended to achieve a vertically integrated treat
ment of application, middleware, and network. A low-level toolkit prov
ides basic mechanisms such as communication, authentication, network i
nformation, and data access. These mechanisms are used to construct va
rious higher level metacomputing services, such as parallel programmin
g tools and schedulers. The longterm goal is to build an adaptive wide
area resource environment (AWARE), an integrated set of higher level
services that enable applications to adapt to heterogeneous and dynami
cally changing metacomputing environments. Preliminary versions of Glo
bus components were deployed successfully as part of the I-WAY network
ing experiment.
