A novel carbon monoxide oxidation catalyst based on highly dispersed Mn ore
-species grafted onto the internal wall of an MCM-41 material is described.
This material is prepared via the chemical reaction of Mn-2(CO)(10) with S
i-OH groups on the surface of mesoporous silica, followed by subsequent hea
t treatment in air. EXAFS studies indicate that this material contains no c
arbonyl groups but with new Mn-O interactions (three Mn-O at 1.900 Angstrom
and one MnO at 1.747 Angstrom) and a Mn-Si interaction (via Mn-O-Si) at 3.
280 Angstrom. The best fitted model suggests that the anchored Mn-oxo speci
es has a structure resembling Mn2O7. (C) 1999 Acta Metallurgica Inc.
