The effects of thermal annealing and optical darkening on Phi 2.54 x 2.54 c
m(2) CsI(TI) crystals damaged by exposure to Co-60 gamma radiation and on u
nirradiated crystals have been studied. Thermal annealing can restore radia
tion-damaged crystals to their unirradiated state and can even improve the
scintillation performance of unirradiated crystals. Optical darkening of cr
ystals with an intense UV source leads to the production of a number of ban
ds in the absorption spectra of crystals, which may be removed by isochrona
l annealing. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
