The thermal and photochemical reactions of M[Mn(CO)(5)] (M = Na, PPN) with
C-60 and the photochemical reaction of Mn-2(CO)(10) with M[C-60] give the s
ame green complex of Mn(-I), M[Mn(CO)(4)(eta(2)-C-60)]. The C-60 coordinate
s conventionally via a six-six ring junction but appears to be a better pi-
acceptor than. CO, since the average of the carbonyl stretching frequencies
of PPN[Mn(CO)(4)(eta(2)C(60))] is similar to 77 cm(-1) higher than the ave
rage of those of PPN[Mn(CO)(5)].
