Perturbations of the plasma conductivity, and of the corresponding polariza
tion currents caused by the action of a gravity wave on a sporadic E-layer,
are discussed. It is shown that longitudinal currents providing continuity
of the total current should be taken into account. Magnetic variations on
the ground, associated with such horizontal and longitudinal currents, are
investigated theoretically. Numerical estimates of the effect, based on rea
l ionospheric data, are presented.
