We report type-II superconductivity in the germanium clathrate compound, Ba
8Ga16Ge30 with critical temperature, T-c = 7.5 +/- 0.2 K as determined by m
agnetic susceptibility measurements. Barium atoms occupy cage voids provide
d by a covalent sp(3) hybridized network of gallium and germanium. Magnetic
susceptibility and transport measurements were used to characterize the tr
ansition. [S0163-1829(99)06829-0].
