Abstract
It is shown that two geometrical phases can be assigned to an energy band i
n a solid. Under some symmetry conditions these two phases coincide. A prec
ise relation is established between these two phases, and it is shown that
for pyroelectric (ferroelectric) crystals these two phases are, in general,
