Abstract
Diurnal changes in the vertical distribution of diatoms (their abundance an d content of chlorophyll a) at different levels of insolation were investig ated. The cells of seamless colonial pennate diatoms were shown to be capab le of photoinduced diurnal vertical migrations. The existence of an "active " mechanism controlling vertical migrations in Asterionella formosa Hass is proposed.
